ETO / AV / IT — Electro-Technical Officer on Yachts
The ETO (Electro-Technical Officer) is responsible for the vessel's electrical, electronic, audio-visual, communications, and IT systems. Modern large yachts carry entertainment systems rivaling five-star hotels, complex bridge electronics, satellite communications, Starlink and VSAT installations, and onboard server networks — all maintained by a specialist who bridges engineering and technology disciplines.
Bridge Systems, Communications, and Navigation Electronics
The ETO maintains and troubleshoots all bridge electronics: radar, chartplotters, VHF radios, AIS, autopilot, GMDSS equipment, and integrated bridge management systems. Familiarity with Garmin, Furuno, B&G, Raymarine, Simrad, and custom large-yacht bridge systems is expected on commercial yachts. Software updates, antenna alignment, and system integration across multiple manufacturers are routine ETO responsibilities.
AV, Guest Entertainment, and Onboard Networks
Guest entertainment systems — surround sound, touchscreen control systems (Crestron, Savant, AMX), smart TVs, movie theaters, and outdoor speaker systems — are maintained by the ETO. Onboard IT includes network infrastructure (switches, access points, network storage), crew communications systems, and integration with satellite internet (Starlink Maritime, KVH VSAT). Large yacht ETOs often hold certifications from Crestron, Savant, or Lutron for building automation and AV control.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What qualifications does a yacht ETO need?
- Formal qualifications vary — some ETOs hold STCW electro-technical officer certifications, while others come from consumer electronics, IT, or marine electronics backgrounds. Demonstrated competence in marine electrical, AV, and network systems is the primary credential in practice.
- Is a separate ETO needed on every large yacht?
- Dedicated ETOs are most common on vessels over 100ft with complex electronics and AV installations. Smaller vessels rely on the chief engineer or shore-based contractors for electrical and electronics work.
- Does an ETO work on Starlink Maritime installations?
- Yes. ETO roles frequently include Starlink Maritime deployment and management, cellular signal booster configuration, and integration of satellite, cellular, and marina Wi-Fi into a unified onboard network.
