STCW Guide for Yacht Crew — Basic Safety Training & Beyond

STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) is the international framework governing training and certification requirements for commercial maritime crew. For yacht crew working on commercially operated vessels — charter yachts, flagged commercial yachts, or inspected passenger vessels — STCW Basic Safety Training is the minimum required credential, and higher-level STCW endorsements are required for officers and senior crew.

STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) — What It Includes

STCW BST consists of four components: Personal Survival Techniques (survival suits, life rafts, abandoning ship), Fire Prevention and Firefighting (fire extinguisher use, fire fighting theory and practical), Elementary First Aid (CPR, first aid basics), and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (communication, shipboard safety culture). The full BST course takes 4–5 days and must be completed at an approved STCW training institution.

Advanced STCW Endorsements for Officers and Senior Crew

Beyond BST, STCW provides higher-level endorsements: Advanced Firefighting (required for officers), Medical First Aid and Medical Care (required at different officer levels), Proficiency in Survival Craft (required for officers commanding lifeboat or rescue boat drills), and electronic navigation endorsements. Large yacht flag states increasingly require the STCW MEOL (Management Level Engineering Officer for Large Yachts) and OOW (Officer of the Watch) certifications for senior engineering and deck officers respectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get STCW Basic Safety Training in Fort Lauderdale?

STCW Basic Safety Training certificates don't have a standardized expiration date, but many flag states and commercial operators require refresher training every 5 years. Check the requirements of your flag state or employer.
Is STCW required for crew on private yachts?
For strictly private (non-commercial) yacht operations, STCW is not legally mandated in most jurisdictions. However, many private yacht owners and captains require it of their crew as a safety standard, and it is effectively required for anyone pursuing a professional career in yachting.
